With his powerful stage presence and the unmatched richness of his voice, Ildebrando D’Arcangelo is celebrated by critics and the public alike as one of today’s most exciting bass baritones. He is particularly noted for his interpretations of Mozart’s Figaro, Don Giovanni and Leporello while his repertoire also includes a vast selection of roles from the bel canto era by Bellini, Donizetti and Rossini, Verdi’s Rigoletto or Bizet’s Escamillo as well as the baroque repertoire by Monteverdi, Handel and Vivaldi.

A native of Pescara, Ildebrando D'Arcangelo began his studies in 1985 at the conservatory of Luisa D'Annunzio in Pescara, under Maria Vittoria Romano, honing his skills under Paride Venturi in Bologna. He won the “Toti dal Monte” International Competition in Treviso, Italy in 1989 and 1991, and, thereafter, he made his operatic debut in Mozart’s Così fan tutte and Don Giovanni. He is now a regular guest at La Scala in Milan, the Vienna State Opera, the Theater an der Wien, the Teatro del Liceu in Barcelona, London’s Royal Opera, Opéra Bastile in Paris, the Metropolitan Opera in New York, the Lyric Opera of Chicago, Salzburg and Baden-Baden Festivals. On concert and opera stages he has collaborated with Claudio Abbado, Riccardo Chailly, John Eliot Gardiner, Daniele Gatti, Valery Gergiev, Christopher Hogwood, René Jacobs, Riccardo Muti, Seiji Ozawa, Antonio Pappano, Georg Solti and others.

In the 2012/2013 season Ildebrando D'Arcangelo will appear in Los Angeles Opera (Don Giovanni),  the Vienna State Opera (Count Almaviva in Le nozze di Figaro and Alidoro in La Cenerentola), in Chicago Opera (Don Pasquale) and Teatro del Liceu in Barcelona (Selim in Il Turco in Italia). The start of the previous season found him in Los Angeles for Così fan tutte (Guglielmo). Thereafter, he returned to Italy for the inauguration of the new La Scala season where he alternates between the title role and that of Leporello in a new Don Giovanni production conducted by Daniel Barenboim. He returned to La Scala later in the season for the title role of Le Nozze di Figaro. Figaro also marked his return to the London’s Royal Opera in spring 2012 and Dulcamara in L’elisir d’amore marked his return to Baden-Baden in May 2012. In summer 2012 he performed the title role in a new Zeffirelli production of Don Giovanni at the Arena di Verona.

His vast discography includes – alongside with two solo album with Handel’s and Mozart’s arias, Rossini’s Stabat Mater or Verdi’s Requiem – complete opera recordings, from which let´s name at least DVDs: Anna Bolena with Anna Netrebko and Elīna Garanča from the Vienna State Opera (Deutsche Grammophon 2011); Carmen from Covent Garden (Decca 2009); Le Nozze di Figaro from the Vienna State Opera (Deutsche Grammophon 2007) and Milan’s La Scala (Arthaus Music 2011); I puritani from the Teatro Comunale di Bologna (Decca 2010);  L’elisir d’amore with Rolando Villazón and Anna Netrebko from the Vienna State Opera (Virgin 2006) and Don Giovanni from the Theater an der Wien (the role of Leporello, Arthaus Music 2009). His most recent CD opera recording is the title role in Don Giovanni conducted by Yannick Nézet-Séguin (Deutsche Grammophon, September 2012).

Mr. Ildebrando D’Arcangelo has become an exclusive recording artist with Deutsche Grammophon in 2009.
