"Liquid gold that flows over any complicated ornament": that is a description of the voice and skill of a Canadian soprano whose B emotional expression and brilliant vocal technique have destined her for Baroque opera. In addition to her work on opera stages, she regularly collaborates with important Baroque orchestras. Many critics already consider Karina Gauvin a living legend who also interprets twentieth-century music with equal enthusiasm.

J. D. ZELENKA Missa Divi Xaverii ZWV 12(Czech premiere)

The first performance of a work which has for centuries lain in some dusty archive is always a cause for great celebration. And when we are dealing with a major composer whose known works have already been researched in detail, such an event arouses expectations many times greater. Collegium 1704 shall offer the public Zelenka’s festive Missa Divi Xaverii in counterpoint to Bach’s festive Magnificat.

W. A. MOZART
Symphony No. 40 G minor KV 550
Great Mass in C minor KV 427

Mozart’s most extensive mass composition is marked by a fate similar to that of his famous Requiem. His Great Mass has also remained as an unfinished torso, and the circumstances of its composition and first performance are similarly shrouded in mystery. Even without the missing conclusion, this extremely personal work of Mozart’s has gone down in the history of sacred music as one of the most powerful musical settings of the mass text.

EASTER CONCERT
Concert to mark the tenth anniversary of the founding of the Collegium 1704 orchestra and the Collegium Vocale 1704 vocal ensemble

Its very first publisher, Hans-Georg Nägeli, already termed this mass "the greatest musical masterpiece of all times and nations." The unsurpassed quality of this colossal work has fascinated musicians and concert-goers for more than 250 years. But this same boundless respect as well as performance traditions handed down from the times of Romanticism have functioned as blinders, preventing us from seeing the mass without bias or preconceptions.
Even if it is impossible to discover any universal truth about how to perform it, Collegium 1704 will look in on this brilliant work without fear although still with humility and try to show its magnificently vivid colours without the accumulated patina of interpretive tradition.

Marin MARAIS Suite de Alcione

Sandrine Piau is one of those artists whose intelligence and aesthetic discernment have predestined them to the refined music of French opera. The colourful music of Lully and his successors is permeated with the nobility, joy, and royal magnificence that sprouted up from the soil of courtly culture in the court of Louis XIV.
The charm and artistry of Sandrine Piau will transform the Rudolfinum into the French kings’ palace at Versailles!
